Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar
"An Apple a day, keeps the Doctor away." Most of us have heard of this phrase at one time or another in our lives but does this saying hold true for its byproduct; Apple Cider Vinegar? We did some research and it would appear that
What is Apple Cider Vinegar?
Apple Cider Vinegar is the result of squeezing out liquids from crushed apples and fermenting this liquid with bacteria and yeast until its sugars are turned into alcohol, it then goes through a second fermentation process which turns it into vinegar. Apple Cider Vinegar has been dated back more than 400 BC and was even thought to be used by famed Greek Physician, Hippocrates.
Apple Cider Vinegar owes its distinctly sharp, sour characteristic to Acetic Acid and Malic Acid which are main components of this liquid. It naturally has anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. This means that it can be beneficial to any ailments that can be traced back to a bacteria, virus, or fungus. It is also effective to help normalize low pH levels which can cause greater risks of disease and other health conditions.
My Personal Experience with Apple Cider Vinegar:
To be honest, I was very skeptical of the health benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar when I first started using it. It tasted awful, and most of the time with natural health remedies you have to be extremely patient in order to notice a difference since you aren't really able to visibly see a difference. However, I kept at it and drank an ACV solution everyday. The "Aha!" moment for me was when a nasty bug started going around and everyone around me, including my boyfriend, got sick. I, of course, nursed him back to health while he was feeling under the weather but I never refrained from kissing him as it was a risk I was willing to take. To my surprise, I avoided getting sick... that entire winter! In fact, the only time I've gotten sick since starting my mornings with an Apple Cider Vinegar tonic was when we were vacationing for a week in Cancun this January and I had not been taking my Apple Cider Vinegar (there was a really bad bug going around down there, a bunch of people in our group got sick).
After I got passed the taste I noticed such a huge difference in my body. Not only did it boost my immune system but my digestion was amazing. I wasn't feeling bloated all the time which made me feel like a whole new person. In addition, I wasn't feeling lethargic and had really clean energy (not a caffeine high or something that made me jittery).
As if all the health benefits I mentioned wasn't enough, I also found that Apple Cider Vinegar makes an amazing hair rinse that strips your hair of all of the residue build up leftover from your hair products, it helps with dandruff, and many people use it to grow hair quicker!

Balancing pH Levels:
It is believed that Apple Cider Vinegar has an alkalizing effect on the body despite it being so acidic. This mean that it has the ability to raise and normalize the pH of your body. This is important because your body's pH level has to be between a very narrow range to be functioning optimally. The ideal pH for most people is about 7.4 which is slighting alkaline (7.o is a neutral pH). If your pH level raises too high or too low it enables your body to be vulnerable to health complications such as weight gain, chronic inflammation, hormonal imbalance, high blood pressure, fatigue, joint pain, mood swings, the list goes on.
Poor diets, improper amounts of exercise, and chronic stress can lead to excessive acidity in the body. As a result, our body is forced to extract essential nutrients such as potassium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium from other sources within our bodies such as our bones in an effort to stabilize its pH levels.
The high amount of Acetic Acid in Apple Cider Vinegar has been linked to weight loss and maintenance.
A 2009 study that was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that mice who were supplemented Acetic Acid alongside their meals developed up to 10% less body fat than those who were not supplemented Acetic Acid, despite consuming the same amount of food.
In addition, ACV is often used as an Appetite Suppressant because of its ability to prolong the feeling of satisfaction and fullness and curbing cravings by controlling blood sugar levels.
Dr. Oz recommends drinking a glass of Apple Cider Vinegar and Grapefruits Juice about 30 minutes before a meal in order to help curb cravings and assist in weight loss.
Beauty & Topical Uses:
In addition to being beneficial inside our body, Apple Cider Vinegar is extremely effective for topical use as well.
Hair- Many women use an ACV solution as a hair rinse to strip the hair of any residue left behind from products that might weigh it down. It also helps condition and treat the scalp to reduce dandruff and promote healthy hair follicles, which could be why many women who use Apple Cider Vinegar hair rinses consistently have reported faster hair growth and healthier, shinier overall hair.
Skin- Another popular application for ACV is to help relieve skin issues such as bug bites and sun burns. It also serves as a great deodorizer as the acids from the vinegar creates a hostile environment for bacteria and fungi to grow, greatly reducing odors.
Face- The nutrients and anti-bacterial property of Apple Cider Vinegar makes it a great all natural, alcohol-free toner/astringent and acne treatment.
- Mix a solution of 1/2 Apple Cider Vinegar with 1/2 purified water and keep it in an air tight container in the fridge. After washing your face in the morning and before bed, pour a generous amount on a cotton pad and gently pad and wipe over face. The solution works as an astringent to remove bacteria from the surface of the face, the toner helps reduce pore size, and the cooling sensation reduces puffiness. (Works WONDERS!)
What To Look For In An Apple Cider Vinegar Brand:
It is extremely important that you use high quality Apple Cider Vinegar to optimize its full benefits.
Look for a brand that is:
- Contains a "Mother"
Although the scientific community has yet to catch onto the wonderful benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar that many people already rave about, its long-time use as a natural remedy has been around for centuries. As the famous saying goes, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it," that is the exact mentality I have towards natural and ancient medicine. There is a reason why these traditional remedies have survived from one generation to the next. So the next time you're out getting your groceries, consider picking up a small bottle of Apple Cider Vinegar. You never know how it'll help you unless you give it a try.
